Library Regulations


- All members of the academic community are eligible to use the library (i.e. - Teaching / Research Staff, Special & Laboratory Teaching Staff, Special Technical Laboratory Staff, undergraduate/post-graduate students and administrative staff). Users who do not belong to the academic community may use the Library material upon display of their identity card. They may not, however, borrow any material.

- Only the members of the academic community (i.e. - Teaching / Research Staff, Special & Laboratory Teaching Staff, Special Technical Laboratory Staff, undergraduate/post-graduate students and administrative staff) are eligible to borrow Library material. To this effect a Library Membership Card is required. Applicants should complete a Library Membership form and hand it in with a recent photograph at the Loan Service Office. The membership card is strictly personal and should be shown in all your dealings with the Library. The cost of replacement is € 4.40.

- A rule of silence is to be strictly observed in the Library and the reading room. Mobile phones, smoking, food and drink are not permitted in the Library.

- Briefcases and bags should be left in the special lockers at the entrance hall. The keys to the lockers are available at the Loan Service Office. The users have to leave their ID card in order to have one. In case a user loses a key, the cost of replacement is € 2.50. Also if a user does not return the key in the end of the day, he is charged with € 5 (replacement lock and key) and his library card is cancelled for two months.

- Undergraduate students may borrow up to 5 documents for up to 10 days. All other members of the academic community (i.e. - Teaching / Research Staff, Special & Laboratory Teaching Staff, Special Technical Laboratory Staff, undergraduate / post-graduate students and administrative staff) may borrow up to 10 documents for up to 20 days. All audiovisual material and maps may be borrowed for 3 working days by all user categories.

- All reference material, journals, PhD theses, statistical publications may not be borrowed or removed from the Library.

- All Library users are entitled to renew the loan period twice, provided no other reader has requested the document in question. In order to renew the loan period, readers should return the document to the Library on or before the date of return. After the second renewal the user may not borrow the same document for another 3 days. Renewal is also available via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. - The loan period may be rescheduled at the discretion of the librarian responsible for the document or upon the instruction of a member of the Teaching / Research Staff if the document in question in on high demand during a particular time period.

- Reservations: if a document is on loan, the user may complete the "book reservation form" to ensure that he/she will obtain the document in question as soon as it has been returned. The document is placed on hold for 4 days from the day of its return and, if it is not requested by the user who has made a reservation, it is placed back in the collection and is made available to other users.

- If a document is overdue, undergraduate students are charged with a 0.40-euro fine/document while all other members of the academic community with a 0.70-euro fine/document.

- Any material lost or damaged while it is in the possession of the user should be replaced within one week. If the material in question is out of print or stock the user should pay its approximate cost.

- All students who are about to graduate should request from the Library a statement confirming that no material is due to be returned or replaced.

- The personal details of the Library users, which are kept at the Library, are protected and are not made available to any third party.

- All users must agree to the terms and conditions of the Library Regulations in order to become members of the Library. Users who do not abide by the Library Regulations are initially referred to the Library Committee and, in case of persistent breach of the Regulations, to the Senate.


- Use of the computers and online services: all users may use the PCs and the other electronic equipment of the Library solely for educational/research purposes.

- Photocopies: all users may use the photocopiers upon request of the special magnetic card which is available at the Loan Service Office. It is the responsibility of the users to obey the Copyright Law.

-Special Equipment – Braille system: the Library & Information Centre in an effort to accommodate users with disabilities is equipped with an adaptive technology workstation for people with vision impairments.
